Fall Activities For Kids Near Saranac Lake, NY

It’s really, really hard to top fall in Saranac Lake. From the harvest bounty to some of the world’s most glorious autumn colors, this may just be the single most swooned-over season in the Adirondack Mountains, despite their truly year-round appeal.

You won’t find a better perch from which to enjoy all that fall in the Adirondack High Peaks has to offer than Saranac Waterfront Lodge. And that’s certainly true if you’re staying at our LEED-certified, eco-luxe accommodations with children in tow.

Here are just a few—just a few, mind you!—ideas for fall activities with kids on a Saranac Waterfront Lodge getaway.

Soak Up the Fall Colors On the Water

As guests of ours here at the Lodge, you’ll not only find yourselves sitting pretty right on the shores of Lake Flower’s Pontiac Bay: You’ve also got ample opportunity to get out on the water, which puts the vast liquid playground of the Saranac Chain of Lakes at your disposal.

And when it comes to “all colors, you can go beyond the essentially limitless hiking trails and scenic drives ideal for "leaf-peeping" and also enjoy the natural spectacle on our local lake system: downright unforgettable! Our private dock offers up stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, pontoon boats, and other watercraft that you and the rest of the gang can take out onto Lake Flower—and beyond—to soak up the blazing canopies (times two, actually, given their shimmering reflection in the lakewater).

Visit the Great Adirondack Corn Maze at Tucker Farms

Your lakeside guest room or suite here at Saranac Waterfront Lodge puts you and the kids only a few miles from one of the standout fall attractions in the Saranac Chain of Lakes region: the Great Adirondack Corn Maze over at Tucker Farms in Gabriel, New York. This beloved seasonal institution is an all-ages kind of blast, and each year features a distinctly themed corn-maze design. The 2023 edition is “Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head.”

The Great Adirondack Corn Maze is open through the last weekend of October, from noon to 5 PM on Thursdays and Sundays and from noon to 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Those weekend evenings are extra-special: They’re the attraction’s Flashlight Nights, with after-hours forays into the maze (bring your own flashlights!) and plenty of associated fun courtesy of a bonfire and s’mores-making.

Get to Know the Signature Bird of Our Region at the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation

Among the truly defining experiences in the Saranac Chain of Lakes and the rest of the Adirondacks is hearing the magnificently mournful call of the common loon. These gorgeous waterbirds are readily seen on our area lakes, and we’re lucky to have a renowned institution dedicated to studying and protecting them: the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation.

Kids will love learning more about loons here, from the center’s exhibits to such educational field trips as the three-hour-long Lake Clear Guided Paddles. There are multiple such guided paddles offered this fall, including one preceding the Adirondack Loon Celebration on Sunday, October 8th. That’s a fabulous idea for a daytrip out of our Lodge, with plenty of kids games, arts-and-crafts, a scavenger hunt, and other family fun on offer alongside presentations on the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation’s mission and research.
