Go on an Adirondacks Winter Adventure with These Snow & Ice Activities

  • Lawn Games
Enjoy friendly competition while playing games on our lakeside lawn such as corn hole or croquet. See the front desk to check our equipment out.
  • Skiing & Snowboarding
A quick drive from Saranac Waterfront Lodge is Whiteface - the most challenging & diverse local ski resort that has over 90 trails of groomers, parks, glades, and slides. If you're a beginner and looking for more gentle slops the whole family can enjoy Mt. Pisgah - it's right in Saranac Lake, and even offers tubing.
  • Cross-country Skiing
For a relaxing skiing experience, try Nordic cross-country skiing at Dewey Mountain or Mt. Van Hoevenberg. Take in the beauty of the Adirondack wilderness as you cross-country ski the groomed trails. Both venues offer rentals and have cozy base lodges.
  • Ice Climbing
From late fall to early spring take your pick of ice-covered cliffs, frozen waterfalls, and more throughout the Adirondack Park. Whether you are a beginner or veteran, are looking for a guide or would prefer to climb solo, there is an ice climbing option for everyone.
  • Snow Shoeing
Enjoy snowshoeing the Adirondacks on a network of diverse trails at Paul Smith's College VIC- you're bound to encounter numerous Adirondack ecosystems! For a gentler slope try Dewey Mountain- they even have a cozy base lodge for warming yourself.
  • Snowmobiling
Explore the snow-covered scenery of the Adirondacks on main trails & secondary loops of our system - that span to Lake Placid, Tupper Lake and Malone. Don't forget to download the ADK Snowmobiling app as a companion map for your journey.
  • Tubing
Tubing is an activity the entire family will love, and the best place to do it is Mt. Pisgah. Race each other down their two-lane track and let the rope-tow do the work of bring you back to the top. You can also warm up, grab a hot drink & snack between rides in their lodge.
  • Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Ice Palace
Since it's inception in 1898, the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival has been held as a famous 10-day festival in February. The festival hosts sporting events like the frying pan toss and curling, performances like variety shows, two parades, and three sets of fireworks. The most famous of all is the ice castle - a palace crafted with ice cut from Lake Flower, and sits on the shore directly next to the lodge!
  • Indoor & Outdoor Ice Skating
Wether you want to play broom-ball on Lake Colby, or free skate inside in an Olympic rink in Lake Placid, we have it all! Plan your next family hockey tournament on Mirror Lake or grab a pair of rentals and skate the Olympic Speed Skating Oval this winter. Don't forget to check the schedule for the Stars on Ice figure skating shows!
  • Winter Forest Bathing
Winter Forest Bathing immerses you in the sights, sounds, scents and textures of the forest. Experience mindfulness without trying. We recommend booking a guided experience with our friends at Adirondack Riverwalking & Forest Bathing for a learned practice that you can take home
  • Toboggan Chute
When the ice is thick enough, you can soar down a 30-foot high converted ski-jump onto Mirror Lake in Lake Placid. These ice-covered chutes can send your wood toboggan over 1,000 feet! We recommend checking availability first, as this is a weather permitting attraction.
  • Ice Fishing
With the robust waterways of Saranac Lake comes an anglers paradise- robust fishing! Grab a licensed local guide and go out on Lake Clear or Tupper Lake, or sign up for the annual Colby Classic Ice Fishing Derby. Don't forget your fishing license- they're sold at Blue Line Sports right in downtown Saranac Lake.
  • Fat Tire Biking
Anywhere you can cross-country ski & snowshoe, you can ride a fat tire bike! The thick off-road tires on these bikes will have no problem trudging along groomed trails at Paul Smith's VIC, or hard packed natural snow on the Jack Rabbit trail in Lake Placid. Bring your own or grab a rental at High Peaks Cyclery or Placid Planet Bikes.
